The new cover is here.

Everyone always asks me when I'm planning on sharing Gabe and Livy's story. I get that question at least once a week.

Well, it's been in the works, but the stars all had to align. They finally have. Coming in Feb or March next year, you'll get a peek into Elizabeth's past. How she became an agent, her first cases, and the one choice that set fate in motion. In Past will Haunt, you're going to see it all unfold.

Feb -March 2016

We all recall from True Love Lost that she took the life of the man who assaulted her partner, and best friend. When the serial killer that she was hunting turned on Livy, Elizabeth broke the law and committed the ultimate crime.
MURDER.

We're going to go into her past and see what happened, live it through her eyes, and in the process see what her life was like before Ethan Blackhawk. We're also going to see his life unfold too. They're going to just miss each other, time after time. Proving that fate is in control after all.

That's not all!

In the following book, Choices will Destroy  ( book 14) we're going to flash to present time and see how that one choice to kill the serial killer will change their lives. It's going to be raw, emotional, and heartbreaking.

No one is above justice.

NO ONE.

I pondered offering these two books as one mega novel, but it would just be too expensive for my fans who buy paperbacks, so I had to break it in to two parts. I always promised my fans that I wasn't out to make money on writing. I do this for the love of it. (Okay, maybe i do it because i love living in a fantasy land too) It's cheaper for you the readers to get it in two pieces than if i had to raise the price of the kindle books too.

I know i promised a mega book, so to make up for it, these two books will be released back to back. One on a Wednesday, and the second on the Friday. You'll have two FBI books in one month :)

I hope you'll love them.
I hope i can pull it off and write them to all of your standards. You know what I'll be doing on my summer vacation!!!!

Dangerous Misery is here!

YAY!
There's another vampyre book here!
I'm so excited.

I know you're thinking.. 'Great. A vamp book. It's so overdone.'
Well, I can promise you this series is totally different. Think of the FBI threesome rolled into a paranormal book about sexy blood suckers.

There's Jolie.
There's Jacques.
Oh... there's Flynn.
Mmmmmm. Detective Flynn Brogan is to die for...

Literally.

Dangerous Misery, book 3 is available here.

Book one is here, and book two is here.

If you haven't read the series yet, trust me you're going to want to!
Dangerous Retaliation is out in August, and it's my favorite of the series so far. YAY!!!
Get reading, and don't forget to help an indie author out and leave a review!

It's how i keep doing what i love ;)

Much love, mayhem, and murder,

Fear not!

Hi all!

A few of you have contacted me and left comments regarding Greyson and Curtis in Heaven is Weeping.

Is their family really destroyed?
Are Curtis and Greyson over?

Fear not. You're going to see more of the duo in the next book, Hell is Burning. I can promise you that they will be back together again in their father and son role, even though they seem broken. A lot is going to happen in that book, so get out your tissues, and be ready!

On another note...

I'm just about done with the next Littlemoon book, Truth is Found. It'll be out in October, so hang in there. I think you'll like it. We're going to be meeting Nyx Nightingale. She and Beau Christensen have a journey to take.

I hope you enjoy it :)

Off to finish working!

Don't forget to preorder your copies of Dangerous Misery, Sinner Reborn, and Pledging to Die!!!

If you haven't joined my email list, here's the link. I promise you won't be spammed, and no one will contact you for anything other than to tell you when a book is released. (or available)

Much love, mayhem, and murder,

Morgan

Greetings from Morganville

Today, I started writing Truth is Found.

I'm so excited to be doing this next Littlemoon book. It's like Scooby-Doo for adults. It makes me smile the entire time I'm writing it.
I can't wait to see how it comes out.

The Littlemoons are trying to bounce back from the loss they suffered. (Sorry! can't spoil it if you haven't read Unthinkable Games)  It's not easy for them. After the last book ends, two weeks have past, and the team is falling apart.
It's heart wrenching!
UGH!
I hope you all have tissues!

I just got the next four books in for final proofing. That's my next task after wrapping this book. I am thrilled with the way the covers came out, and the story too! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Pledging to Die. Elizabeth has outdone herself once more. (At least I think she has!)
I can't believe that in a couple months you're all going to get to read it! I love Johanna and Brody. I am looking forward to finishing their story next month.
It's fun writing Christmas in May!
LOL

If you haven't pre-ordered your books, here are the links.

Dangerous Misery is here.  If you haven't read my vampyre series, i can promise that it's nothing you've seen before. It's like the FBI books, but with the undead, and a few other twists.

Sinner Reborn is here.

Pledging to Die is here.

Don't forget to leave reviews! if you didn't, please go back and share the love with me and other potential buyers. It's like a hug for an indie author!

Off to work!

Have a really great week!!!!

Much love, mayhem, and murder,
Morgan.

Morning!

Happy Sunday!

It's a gorgeous day here in NE Pa, and I already took a walk and got in some sun. I hope you're doing the same!
This week is a read week for me. I'm brushing up on the Littlemoon books this week, and I'll be starting the fourth book in the series later in the week. I can't wait to write it. We're going to getting to know Beau Christensen and meeting his babe.
Plus, I left you all hanging with the end of Unthinkable games. I have to make a decision regarding that :)

You know me. I like to make you all gasp and then grab the tissues.
(There's your warning.)

I received some great reviews and emails this week, and I decided to take the time to answer some of your questions. I know I've been slacking on blogging. 11 books a year is a tough schedule with all the editing, reviewing, and releasing.

I'm a bad blogger!

Here goes:

Morgan,
I love your books, but I'm dying to find out about Gabe and Livy. Will they have a book?
Genny.

I get asked this question ALOT!
Yes, they are getting their book. After this Christmas, I'll be releasing a mega book. It's going to be in two parts, the first a novella from Elizabeth's past. You'll find out how Gabe and Livy met, you'll see Elizabeth before Ethan, and even see how close they come to meeting before Salem. Fate definitely wanted them together. The book is going to be about 200-250 pages, and take place in the past. THEN two days later, you'll be getting the present book. You'll see how Elizabeth, Gabe, and Livy's actions caused trouble in their present.

I was going to release it as an 800 page book, but with editing, covers, and the cost it would be for a paperback, I didn't want to screw over any of my non-e book readers. An 800 page book is pricy. So, you can read the prequel story, find out the past, and then two days later blow right into the present day novel. That way I can keep my prices down. You all know I don't ever charge more than 3.99 for a 600 page book. I won't ever screw my readers over like that.

So, around valentine's day, you'll have two more FBI books coming out. Next year is going to be a big book year!

Morgan,
You're not running the Sinner series anymore? Why?
Emily

Well, that's another question i get. The series was always meant to be a trilogy. It was supposed to be about Callie, Nate, and Luke. They're like siblings and the stories were supposed to be short and sweet.
THEN i created Maura, Quinn, and Avalon. They took on a life of their own. Thus the Oracle series coming out next year. I couldn't end them. They still had so much more story to tell. Nate finds love, but can't have her. Luke finds a woman who can finally best him and kick his ass, an Quinn forever has to deal with his anger issues and the stresses of having a strong willed woman.

So, in 2016, you'll have the Oracle series; The phoenix files. They'll be helping people who need it most, and all of these cases will be paranormal. Like Avalon, they will all have gifts. These people will be hunted by evil, and need a special team to covertly save them.

Technically, they won't be ending. :) YAY!

Morgan,
I just saw you're ending the Croft series! NOOOOOOOO!
Hildi

LOL. Yeah, I'm ending it, but not how you think. It's going to go a darker more vigilante route than it is now. With Greyson in the FBI, and Emma a cop, they can't save everyone. There are laws in place, and that makes it harder. By now, if you read Heaven is Weeping, you know that at the end of the book, they come into a lot of money. How will they use it? What happens when lines are crossed, and you're no longer able to follow the letter of the law?

So, Greyson and Emma will be having a new journey. I promise it'll be similar, but with a twist. There will be some characters not crossing over into it, so get out the tissues. Times change, and fate already has written their path.

That's all I have time for today! I have some reading to do! Happy Sunday!

Thank you for your questions! If you have more, email them to me, and I'll post them here! author.m.kelley@gmail.com
Or if you have a comment or just want to say hi! Feel free! I personally answer all my emails!

If you haven't left reviews for the books you've read, can you please? Amazon is making it harder and harder for independent authors, and promoting less and less unless you have lots of reviews. I would really appreciate it! They don't have to be long or elaborate! I swear !

Thank you all for reading my books!
Send me your questions, and I'll be posting them here!!!

Much love, mayhem, and murder,
Morgan.

Hell is Burning

Morning all!

I'm just wrapping up all the corrections on Pledging to Die, and shipping them off to the team to start the editing process. I really enjoyed writing that book. It was fun to start Johanna Madden and Broderick Seaton's story.
I really love them!

Anyway, I just popped in to reveal my new cover. I just got Hell is Burning 's cover back from Laura Gordon. She's going to be wrapping all the covers for that series, and then I'll be switching over to Lillian Asterios for the rest of the books from here on out :)

What do you think?

It's perfect for the story, and I can't wait for you to read it. I love me some Greyson Croft. He's probably my favorite character (of the men--but don't tell the others!) I truly enjoy writing about his caveman antics and pushing Emma to her breaking point with him. Plus, we had the bad break up at the end of Heaven is Weeping, and I want to clear that up in the next book.

Well, have a great weekend! I plan on working, but I just wanted to stop in and say hi!

Go read, and if you haven't left your reviews for Dead Shall Speak, or the other books recently out, can you pop over to amazon and leave one?

Help an Indie author out! I want to keep my job :)

Much love, mayhem, and murder,
Morgan.

Sinner Reborn is here!

Happy Monday! I know!
Blah!
I'm right there with you!

Maybe I can shed a little light on your morning. Sinner Reborn, the final book in the Carter Chronicles trilogy, is here! So, we're going to see what happens to Callie, Nate, and Luke.  (Plus all the people who love them too!)

You can get it here!

I'm so excited to release this book! I had a blast writing it. It's been a great ride with these books, and I'm happy to say that it isn't over. This trilogy was so popular, and I've had emails and messages from countless numbers of people to keep it going.
Well, I'm going to that!

Next year, in 2016, I'll be rolling out Oracle is Rising. It's the first book in the Phoenix Case files. It's going to be all about people with exceptional gifts. They're in trouble, and the team is going to keep Avalon's dream alive.

So, fear not!
You haven't seen the last of Callie, Quinn, Nate, Luke, and Maura..

I hope you enjoy :)

much love, mayhem, and murder,

Morgan.

Prologue for Dead Shall Speak

Evening all!
I'm just getting up to start working on the last part of Sinner Reborn, and I decided to give a taste of next month's book, Dead Shall Speak.

Elizabeth, Callen, and Ethan are on their way! I'm excited for you to read the second part of Tony Magnus and Jaxon Armstrong's story! It won't be the end of theirs, since I have a few more plots in the works for our doctor duo!

Out March 6th...

Dead Shall Speak

                 By Morgan Kelley

~Prologue~
   Rural Kentucky

There is nothing in the world like killing.
The fine art of taking a life should be celebrated.

Murdering another human being can fill your soul with such a hunger for power and thirst for control. It grabs hold of you, refusing to let go.

If it lures you into its trap, and you cave, taking that first step into its questionable darkness, you will forever be helpless to ever break free. Once you find your hands wrapped around the long, graceful throat of your victim, there can be no going back.

Death’s spell can’t be broken.
This was one hell of a lesson that he’d been forced to learn from his early childhood. It had formed him, making him the man he was today. To him, there was no mistaking the role that the fairer sex played in life.
Women had their place.

In bed.
In a kitchen.
Giving birth to the next generation.
In the grave.

Once they wore out their purpose, it was time to take care of the situation. While mercy was given, at some point, it was time to move on. The only thing was, you couldn’t just let them walk away. Once you found, owned, and loved them, there was no way to share the fairer sex with others.
Forever, they should remain yours.

But how was one supposed to do that?

There was only one way.
If the right woman was lucky enough to be found, brought into the family, and made one of your own, there was only one way to set her free.
Death.

It may seem wrong, but it was no worse than letting her walk away and into someone else’s arms.
Sometimes, you had to take a life when it no longer held any value to you. Just because you didn't want her, it didn't mean that someone could have what you had worked so hard to find, mold, and love.

It was times like these that only the strong could rise up, take control, and do the deed. At least, that was what he’d been taught from the ripe old age of five.
Fortunately, he wasn't above taking a life. It was part of the circle, and he was good with that.
From birth, he’d been raised to know his role in life. As a child, there were toys, playtime, and lots of fun, but there were also lessons that he needed to learn.

After all, he was being fostered for what was on the horizon.
He was the only son.
A protective husband.
An all-powerful leader of their household.

They all had roles to fill, just like the woman in his bed knew her place. Although, when he found her, he thought she would last longer than the six months they’d been together. He had such high hopes for her.

Unfortunately, she was becoming troublesome. It was unlikely that he could teach her to be a good partner and wife. She wasn't as malleable like he first believed her to be.
While she had beauty, there was one major flaw.
See, she liked to fight him.

When their paths crossed, seeing her from afar, she was just some runaway on the street. He gave her a ride, brought her home, and then made her special. In the moment that their eyes met, he was more than willing to give her everything.

His heart.
His home.
His seed.

Like he was taught, they were all unique and valuable to him. Whether from a good family or from the street, they mattered. Each had the potential to do great things.
In fact, he saw all that in her.

At first…

She wasn’t just a throwaway.
None of them were.
Each one was handpicked to be his wife. Maybe not legally, but in his mind, the eyes of God, and their family, she was to be the one.

She fit his requirements.
Called to his body.
Touched his soul.

After the last one, and the one before her, he assumed she would be ‘the one’. On the outside, she was the perfect woman. From her wavy black hair, the bright shiny eyes, and the full plump lips, he believed his quest to be over. There wasn't a shadow of a doubt.
She would birth him sons.

This small sprite of a woman would be the mother of his children. Together, they would start building his empire, one boy at a time.

They would be powerful like him. In everything they did, they would carry on his bloodline and make him proud.

They would lead. When their time came, just like his had, his boys would take the reins and make their mark in history.

They would take over for him, learning from their beloved father. Once trained, his sons would be amazing men.

Hadn't that been the point? They would lead, making him proud, just like he hoped he had done for his father.

God bless the old man’s soul.
He really missed him. At that moment, with the problems he was having with his ‘bride’, he really wished his father was there.

Unfortunately, with this one, he’d miscalculated. While the women his father picked were far more refined, he wasn’t having any such luck. Look at the one he chosen to be his wife.
She was failing miserably. After weeks of trying to keep her quiet, locked up, and flexible to his wants and desires, he was finally giving up. The truth was clear--she just couldn't be trained.
Unlike the family pet, she wasn't able to learn the basic rules. It was a shame because he had such high hopes for her.

Granted, the sex between them was hot, but he was tired of forcing her. Was it so hard for her to just give in?

Why couldn't she let him have her body to implant the seed? It was such a simple request. She’d have everything she wanted, if only she’d let him have a child.

Each night, when the time came to go to their marital bed, she had to be dragged from the locked room, thrown onto the mattress, and given no choice.
After weeks, she still refused to give in.

It was a constant battle.

It was like she thought playing hard to get could win her some extra benefits in their life.
She was dead wrong.

He was sick of it. What he wanted was the skill to train the woman, making her his.
Granted, he’d only just begun this journey, trying to find the womb that would help him build his family, but it was hard. Now, he understood why it took his father so long to find a woman to bring forth life.

This was why his dad had been so old when he was a child. It wasn’t easy to pick the perfect wife.
It took time and patience.
All his life, he hoped that this wouldn't happen to him. He wanted more time with his children than his own father had with him. He needed more training, leading, and insight into how to do what he did.

He longed for it, almost as much as he wanted a good wife.
He prayed it would happen.
If it did, it was surely God’s will.

Staring at his woman’s prone body, he could see the slow fall and rise of her chest. She wasn’t sleeping, but unconscious. Unfortunately, he had to steal her breath in order for her to be less combative. It pained him to hurt her more than needed, but she wanted to claw his eyes out, and that just wasn't right.

Where was the obedience?
The ability to know right from wrong?
The respect for her husband?

Now, it was time to decide what to do with her. It was ultimately his choice. In that moment, the options which stood before him were life or death.

Was she redeemable?
Was she salvageable?
Or... was it time to cut his losses and move on?

“Why can’t you just be a good girl?” he asked, running his fingers down her cheek. “I just want to love you. If you’d let me, I would give you one hell of a life. You’d be in charge of our home, you’d give me babies, and I would keep you safe from all the evil in the world. I would have treasured you until you died.”

She didn't move.

No reply came from her.

There was no sign of life.

Apparently, she was making the choice for him. It appeared to be out of his hands.
He sighed.

So be it.

Death was no stranger to this household.

“Now I have to hurt you, and I hate to do that, April. I wanted you to be mine forever, but you wouldn't see what was right. All you had to be was a good girl. Then, you would be rewarded.”

Grabbing some rope from beneath the bed, he began binding her hands. If God willed it and she was lucky, April Belmont wouldn't be waking up before he did the deed.
In fact, he hoped he would be fortunate too. The last thing he wanted to do was look into her pretty blue eyes as he ended her existence on Earth.

He had a heart.

She may have broken it, but he forgave her. How could he not? Wasn't that what love was all about?
When he had finished tying her up, he straddled her body as he said a prayer.

“Please watch over her as she comes to you, Lord. Forgive her for not knowing her duty in life. May she have peaceful passage to you. I also ask that in her departure, you send me someone who will help me keep our family alive. I ask for your help. Amen.”

At the final word, she began to stir beneath him.

Why was he surprised?

She came into this ‘marriage’ fighting, and it looked like she would go out that way too.

It was so exhausting.
This was why she had to go.

When her eyes popped open, glaring up into his, the intent was there. Despite her hands being bound, she struck out, spitting in his face.

“Fuck you!”
He hit her.

It wasn’t the hardest strike in the world, but it incapacitated her, knocking her silly. “You won’t use that language in my home!” he demanded. “This is just proof that you’re vile and not the one, April. No wife talks to her husband that way. You never could learn your role in life!”

Gathering her wits, she managed to stop the room from spinning by blinking. “Let me go, you creep,” she hissed, trying to unbalance him from his sitting position on her hips.

The sight of him naked repulsed her, making the flesh on her body crawl in revulsion. Every time he touched and raped her, she wanted to cut out his heart.

“Why, April? Why can’t you just behave? I could give you a good life. You could have been my wife--the mother of my children--but instead you want to fight me. Is this life so bad? You were walking the streets. This is paradise compared to what was going to happen to you.”

She glared at him.

“It’s an honor to carry my child. I picked you, and you should be grateful. My father said so. I was a gift, and I was passing that on to you and our firstborn.”

She was angry, sore, and tired of his abuse. If the sex wasn't bad enough, the conditions in which he kept her were enough to make her crazy.

She wasn't an animal.
She was a human being.
The training stopped now.
April would rather die than be in his captivity any longer.

“Fuck you and your father! He’s as vile as you!” she shouted, bucking her body to get him off. What she planned on doing once he was off, April had no idea. Surely, she could fight him.
Or at least that was her hope.

At the mere mention of his father, there was such an anger brewing in him. No one spoke of the great man like he was anything less than perfect.

He was good.
Kind.
The best father in the world.

Talking ill of the man was a death sentence.
Hers.

When rational thought left him, all that was left was intense anger. With his fists, he began beating her. They pummeled her face, chest, and neck. Rage coated him, making him unable to stop the violence. All he saw was that night he’d peeked into his father’s room. He saw the way the man killed his mother for the same sin.

“DON’T.TALK.ABOUT.MY.DAD!” he screamed, punctuating each word with one of his fists.
Finally, it was her sobs which broke the spell, and the sound of his fist damaging flesh and bone.

“This is why you’re dead, April. You can’t follow the rules! You make me so angry! Look what you made me do to you! This is all your fault!”

She curled into the fetal positon, her body and face, battered and bruised.
“Please…” She hiccupped between sobs. “Let me go. I want to go home. I want my mom. I won’t tell anyone. I promise. You’ll be my secret.”

Those words infuriated him.

He was no one’s secret. He was a gift to them all, and by now she should know that.
Staring down at her, he knew what needed to be done. “You’re going home, April. Right now.”
With large angry hands, he wrapped his fingers around her throat. Squeezing with all his strength, he watched her mouth open and close like a fish out of water. She gasped for air, her eyes going wild with fear. He watched as the whites went glossy, and the pupils went dead.

It was ugly.
Violent.
Earned.

For him, it was time to move on. Out with the old choice, and then he could find one who would work better for him. The next woman would be a good match.

He could feel it.

While he would never cheat on April while they were together, he knew it was time to put her to rest and keep looking.

Miss Right was out there, and she would make the perfect wife.

As her face went red, and then blue, he continued squeezing. “Die, April. Just die,” he hissed, leaning down to press his weight across her slim throat.

Bones popped.
Muscles went lax.

Her eyes were huge, filled with all the emotions found during a violent death. As life was slowly ebbing away, so was his anger. April’s body shook beneath him as it released the last ounce of her spirit.

And then…she was gone.

Thankfully, it was over. He was free. Now, he could take that moment to prepare himself to move on. In her passing, there was life. He stared into her eyes to seek the truth. All he found was that blank, hollow stare.

She was dead.
Empty.
Gone.

Slowly, he released her, watching the dead eyes staring up at him. They held so much calm and peace. It gave him the same feelings. Obviously, this was meant to be. If in death, while in the deliverance into God’s hands, there was such calm, it had to be right.

“Thank you for the months you gave me,” he said, slowly closing her eyelids. “I’ll take you where the others are, and then we can break up once and for all. You won’t be forgotten. I promise. I’ll carry a piece of you with me forever. I hope you enjoy your final resting place.”
Of course it wouldn't matter, since she had no say in that. At the moment, she was broken and released to the maker.

It was how it was meant to be.

Dressing, he got ready to head out. It was dark enough outside that he knew he could find the special place to put her.

It was one his father knew well.

Before his passing, the man had shared his secrets.

“April, I wish things could have been different,” he stated, slinging her nude body over his shoulder. She hung there, dead weight.

“Since you’re going, I’ll have to start looking for your replacement. I learned my lesson. I’m picking a better woman this time. She’ll be one I can break. I can’t be so impulsive with her. I’m going to have to watch her more. I learned my lesson.”

He wondered if she had.

Carrying her from his bedroom, and past the door which led to her old prison, he felt no remorse. It was another sign that she wasn't the one. “Say goodbye to our happy home, April. You have a colder hell to head to now.”

With that, he dropped her in the back of his truck and threw a tarp over her. For now, he’d take her to the grave where his first two ‘wives’ were at rest.

While they weren’t worthy to be placed with the family, it was the one thing he needed to do. At the very least, they deserved a decent burial. After all, he did have compassion.

He’d learned that from his beloved father.

His other ‘mistakes’ would now have company. How much more mercy could he offer them?

He laughed as he stared in the rear view mirror. Maybe their spirits could discuss what they did wrong. Maybe there would be a schooling in the afterlife on how to be a good wife.

They all needed it.

All three were failures, and he needed to find a success.

“It’s time to look for a new wife. I think I like this part the best. It’s like shopping.” He had his mental list, and now all he needed was to see who was available.

With that, he pulled out of his driveway and headed to the spot. Tonight, he was a free, single man on the town. He knew just the place to find a girl.

That evening, he was going to get a new wife.

Whether she liked it or not…

Beckett Rand loses his heart to a Littlemoon….

 ~Prologue~
                  One Hundred Years Ago

This was his dream come true.
He finally had his hands on the story of a lifetime. After years of looking for that money maker, here it was. Despite what people thought, it wasn’t easy being a writer. In this day and age, the only thing worth writing about was the oncoming wars.
The papers were filled with it.
Frankly, it bored him to tears.
What he wanted was a story that would be his and his alone. He wanted to make history with something so spectacular that he would make his mark on the world.
He wanted his one big shot at fame.
While he was beginning to doubt that he could pull that off as a writer, he knew this opportunity might finally be his big break. When he saw the house and did the research, it potentially offered him the fame that he wanted. This could be his storyline. So, he went for it.
Yes, it was a pricy investment. On his meager salary, working as a hack at the paper, it was going to make living tough, but he would manage.
The house was now his.
The history here was astounding, and from the minute he heard about it, it drew him in.
Who didn't want to be a part of history?
He certainly did.
Before he could even let the ink dry on the papers, he was on his way to the big time. No more would he struggle to catch the attention of an editor.
He was going to become a prize winning writer. His next attempt would blow up, making him a sensation. The paper would beg him to headline. The world would be talking about him as the riches poured in.
Yes, he wanted the gold, but the glory meant more. If he could succeed in this one little quest, all the while documenting it, he knew he would be legend.
This was going to be one hell of a treasure hunt, and the world would know and love Ralph Clarence before it was over. He was going to put himself out there.
His name would be on everyone’s lips.
In fact, before he knew it, they’d be naming cities after him. The other big shot papers in New York would want him to come there and work.
He’d be big time!
He laughed, trying to rein it in.
Okay, maybe that was putting the cart before the horse on this one, but still Ralph couldn’t help himself. There was no way that he wouldn’t be the one they all talked about.
He knew it.
Glancing outside, Ralph knew it was time to get his night started. Dusk was falling on his third week in the mansion. He really couldn’t believe it was his. The gold was important, but so was the act of putting down roots.
This historically troublesome house was his.
Story or not--he was home.
As he found the first treasure at the beginning of his hunt, his heart began racing. Ralph was one step closer to getting what he wanted.
As soon as it was in his hand, he wrote about it in great detail. He couldn’t miss a single thing as he got ready to continue his hunt for the gold and the Pulitzer.
Then, something odd happened.
He became suspicious that someone would come in and steal his clue.
So, like any good paranoid writer, he hid it again.
Oh, he wouldn’t leave his future out for the world to see. He’d make sure it was safe. While he wrote about it in his journal, he didn't name the location.
He refused.
It didn't feel right.
What if someone stole his journal, and then took the keys to the kingdom?
No, he absolutely couldn’t let that happen. Instead, he went to great lengths to hide it.
Not back where he found it… No.
That would be too risky.
Instead, he placed it somewhere safe. Who would look for a centuries old treasure in plain sight?
No one.
That was the point.
So, Ralph hid it and continued on with the search. With each day he became more and more concerned. While the first treasure was easy to find, the clue left with it wasn’t all that simple to figure out.
Damn!
Whoever hid these little bastards did a good job. It was beyond frustrating, but Ralph wasn’t about to give up.
Not now.
Not ever.
His notoriety was riding on this.
What it came down to was finding this treasure, getting his infamy in history, and maybe scoring a few dames along the way. What woman wouldn’t want to cuddle up to a successful writer and treasure hunter?
This was a part of the glory that he’d never even considered before. He’d be rich, have a great place, and a slew of sexy women who would vie for his attention.
Yeah, in all honesty, he liked that part best.
No longer would the ladies look at him like he was some odd bird. Instead, they would whisper his name with awe and trepidation just like he deserved.
Yeah, it was going to be amazing.
As he crept through the house, he searched every nook and cranny looking for that elusive next piece to the puzzle.
Nothing.
Ralph was getting pissed. While he didn't mind the game, he was getting irritated with the time it was consuming. He was running out of funds.
He needed that gold.
Then came the anger.
The man who sold him the house said it was here, but what if he lied? Granted, he did his research on the legend of Christabel, but he didn't go too deep.
He assumed.
Maybe that was a huge mistake.
What he needed now was to head back to the room where he slept and regroup. There was no need to work himself into a tizzy. Maybe he needed a little nap to refresh his mind. Tonight was going to be a long one, as he scoured the house for the next clue.
Yeah, he’d take a break.
Even while he rationalized the down time, his gut was twisted up in anger.
Ralph was beginning to suspect that he had been conned. He was out of money, and if he wanted to survive and get his future in line, he needed to find the gold soon.
Damnation!
This was a lot more difficult than he originally thought it was going to be. Maybe he’d been a little arrogant.
Back in his room, Ralph stripped down and slid beneath the cool sheets. As he lay there, the shadows danced across the wall from the setting sun and the nearby swamp.
He needed to stop thinking about the gold.
Ralph was becoming obsessed.
Already, the fear and nerves began weighing heavily on him. Yeah, he was beginning to think he’d really screwed up.
In the morning, he’d write a letter to his sister, letting her know where he was and what he’d done. She’d always been good at talking him off the ledge when he’d done something impulsive. Surely, she’d do the same once more.
Closing his eyes, he allowed the worries to pull him under. Once sleep came, so did more shadows.
Only, they weren’t from the water and moonlight.
They were from the evil which lurked there.
As Ralph snored, sawing wood, the darkness crept closer until it was upon him.
The jealousy, animosity, and hate was there…watching him.
It was time.
With one swing, life ended.
With the second blow, the blood splattered, coating the sheets with the life that once flowed through Ralph Clarence.
Oh, he wouldn’t get to be famous.
Not for finding a treasure.
He might get his notoriety eventually--once the truth came out. History would repeat itself, and Ralph would just be one more person who lost their lives thanks to the gold.
He’d failed.
His journey was over.
From here on out, there would need to be another person to seek the riches of the dead. That person would eventually show up, and it would begin all over again.
This time, they would succeed in finding the treasure. Time would only tell as the lure of power drew them in. For now, the darkness would wait.
Watch.
Be patient.
Wiping blood from the gloves, the evil crept back into the wall to plan the dead man’s grave.
Once safely behind it, the details were handled.

Ralph was a failure.
It was on to the next potential treasure hunter.

Someone would solve this.

It was only a matter of time.

Ninety Five Years Ago

He was a lucky man.
At least, that’s what everyone always told him. In his life, Tennessee Woodrow had a knack for finding things. If he had lost his watch, he’d not only find it, but three other things too.
He was destined to take care of this, one way or another.
When he’d seen the place, he had to laugh.
It was like something out of a creepy old movie. The creaking old house, with its winding hallways, was a thing of beauty.
He was an aficionado of the odd.
Tennessee loved the scary black and white films that filled his youth. Now, he was living one.
Growing up, he loved reading books and hearing the tales of so many before him. While his mother thought him foolish for wasting his time with them, he didn't care.
He knew he was destined for greatness.
Look at his luck!
He was barely twenty five, and he’d inherited this great house from his uncle. When the man went missing, the lawyers came and gave him the place.
Now that he was of an age to appreciate it, he would put his mark on it. Since his uncle had paid in full, it was now his, and he would make the most of it.
Granted, it needed some work, but he didn't mind. This would catch the ladies, and maybe, if he was lucky, he could use it to start working on his movie career. These swamps would be the best place to make a film.
In fact, he had a horror movie planned. When he told his mother about it, she actually blanched.
That meant he was onto something.
He knew it.
On the day he arrived, there was a man with a box waiting for him. Inside it were all of his uncle’s possessions. The man, whatever his name was, said that was all they had left of his uncle. He even teased him with the rumors of what happened in the house.
It piqued his interest.
When the man smiled wickedly, giving him the box, Tennessee knew there was something important happening in the grand old house.
He could feel it.
Inside the house, he tore through the box of ‘treasures’, and what he found made his heart skip. Inside were indeed some gems.
There was a map.
A journal.
It appeared to be the ramblings of his missing uncle. While the rest were clothes and other crap he didn't want, the map and journal had gotten his attention.
They only added to the mystery, and he was all about that. While he never thought his flaky uncle would leave him anything cool, he did.
He left him a mystery.
Tennessee couldn’t wait to dig in and try to solve it. Maybe in the process, he’d be able to find his uncle for his mom. His disappearance was tearing her up, and while he didn't really like the man, he loved the woman who gave him life.
He’d figure this all out for her.
Well, maybe.
Inside the sprawling mansion, he began his search. Using the man’s book, he was pretty sure that this would be a piece of cake.
After all, how hard could it be?
His uncle was a fanciful flake, always touting his dreams and crazy stories.
After reading his journal, it was hard to believe that he’d found the first object. In fact, Tennessee was beginning to believe his uncle had lied in his journal, or used a hell of a lot of creative license.
Yeah, that had to be it.
That stupid old book was nowhere to be found, and he was getting angry.
Heading to the office, or what was once someone’s work space, he took a seat in the chair and looked around.
If he was his uncle, where would he stuff a dusty old book?
It had to be in this room.
As he scanned all the shelves, he sought that one title that was written in the note and his journal.
After three hours of dusty searching, he gave up.
“Damn it, Uncle Ralph!” he muttered.
This felt like a waste of time.
“How am I supposed to fund my movie career playing in this old dump?” he asked, sitting back down. “I’ve wasted almost two weeks digging in the dust.”
Closing his eyes, he started thinking back to the man he called family. He wouldn’t have hid the book in the office.
He would have kept it close.
Just as he opened his eyes, there was a creak. Spinning in the chair, he was faced with the glinting blade of a knife.
As it plunged toward his chest, he screamed.
The howl echoed out the window and across the swamp. Yet no one came to save Tennessee. He was on his own.
Lying there, he was forced to listen.
The crickets chirped.
The owls hooted.
The killer left him for dead. On the floor, the young man bled out, life leaving him.
All he could think about were how his wild dreams were abandoning him.
It was all over.
Life was finished.

Yes, Tennessee wanted to make a scary movie, but there was no way he saw this coming.

The house stole it all away.

Tennessee realized something very important. His uncle didn't go missing.
The house killed him.
Like Ralph, he, too, was now dead.

Present Day

It had to be here.
Somewhere in this run down estate was a fortune, and he was going to find it.
No matter how long it took, Jeffery Lamont was going to be victorious. No longer would he be the dreamer in his family.
He was going beyond that and becoming the one who would be the most successful.
No longer would his brother stare down his nose at him. Instead, he’d be the one they came to for money. When a business failed, or his sister needed cash, he would be their money man.
Why?

Because he’d found it.
All he had to do was locate the damn treasure.
It was here.
It had to be.
When he bought the house, the helpful man swore that it was somewhere in the house. Well, by God, he was going to find it! Come hell or high water, he wasn’t leaving until he had that money in the bank.
He couldn’t.
He’d conned his brother into paying for this ‘investment’. Now, he needed to pay him back and be on his merry way. Screw him and his condescending attitude.
Jeffery was tired of being the family screw up.
He was sick of how he always failed.
Why couldn’t they see that he was the dreamer?
Once he heard about this house, he knew it was his destiny. With a name like ‘The Killing House’, how could it not be? It piqued his interest and called to him.
This was going to be fun.
Thankfully, he had managed to outbid the other buyers and it was all his.
Yeah, he was super smart.
Armed with the map, he began his search that first day. When that turned up nothing, Jeffery made sure to cover all his bases. He moseyed into town and did the research needed to dig up anything else he could find to make this job that much easier.
That was when he hit pay dirt.
Now, it would be so much easier, especially with their help…
God!
He hoped so.
Still, he was wandering through the house trying to find the next object. The first had been a real bitch to locate, and in the end, he’d come across it accidentally. It wasn’t where it was supposed to be, and that made him nervous.
Was the map useless?
Was the journal bunk?
He couldn’t let it get him down. He was going to be a legend. If anyone asked, he’d say the first clue was found thanks to his excellent sleuthing skills.
Of course they’d buy it when he was rolling in the gold.
Jeffery laughed at the visual in his mind.
Yeah, he’d be the man.
Picking up the map, he decided not to waste anymore time. Already, it had been two weeks of screwing around. Money and time was a wasting. For now, he’d concentrate on the second object and not stop until he had it.
He was one step closer to being filthy rich.
Jeffery could taste it now.
As he headed down the hall, he was confused.
Something wasn’t right.
He’d been a Boy Scout, and yet he couldn’t follow a simple piece of paper.
Then, it hit him.
The map didn't coincide with the layout of the building. It was off. Everything was changed!
Flipping it around, he tried going the other way. Again, that didn't work.
Well, shit!
This sucked!
The man promised him that it was the way to find the treasure. He’d sworn to heaven and back that it was going to be the sure fire route to getting rich. That’s the only reason he paid all that money for this run down haunted shithole. If not for the money, he had no ties to this hellish town.
It was a swamp.
A hole.
Worthless.
Now, he was angry.
Heading back to his room, he stormed around trying to figure out what he needed to do. At this rate, he’d be wearing more marks in the carpeting.
In the back of his mind, he wanted to stay and continue, but he knew that he needed to do the right thing.
Already, guilt was building.
He’d lied to his family.
He’d practically stolen his brother’s money.
Yeah, he screwed up.
Picking up the phone, he called the man who contacted him. As he waited for his voicemail to kick in, he prepared to tear him a new one.
“Hey, man! I don’t know what shit you’re pulling, but this map is bogus! I want my money back. You can’t find jack in this house. This was a scam, and if you don’t call me right back, I’m calling the cops!”
He hung up the phone and slammed it down on the desk in his bedroom.
He was furious.
This had pissed him off so much, that he didn't hear the slide of stone. If he did, Jeffery would have felt so much more than just anger.
There would be fear.
Terror.
Dread.
Oh, and don’t forget so much alarm.
Instead, while he was lost in his thoughts and rage, more than guilt was coming his way.
Death loomed.
As the shadow crept closer, the heavy pipe was swung, making contact with the back of Jeffery Lamont’s head.
The sickening crunch of bone filled the air. Then, there was the scent of pennies. The coppery tinted smell was there.
The killer watched as Jeffery Lamont crashed to the floor.
Evil was once more victorious as the unconscious man’s body was pulled toward the balcony. There was no need to bury him.
Beneath the balcony sat his watery grave.
The green murk sparkled in the moonlight, giving off an eerie glow.
“You failed, Jeffery. That’s a shame. I thought you’d do a much better job than this. I had hope in you.”

With that, he was heaved over the edge and to his final resting place.
“RIP. I have work to do. You need to be replaced.”
With that, one more victim was claimed to the house that swallowed lives and souls.

“Can no one find this for me?”

Creeping back into the shadows, it was left unanswered.
